This week’s theme, back-formations, made me think of one of my favorite linguistic concepts: retronyms. A retronym is a word that renames an existing object in order to distinguish it from a newer version of the object that has since come into being.
Some examples of retronyms are 2-D movie, analog clock, black-and-white television, brick-and-mortar store, conventional oven, face-to-face meeting, handwritten, landline, live performance, manual typewriter, pre-war architecture, rotary telephone, silent film, snail-mail, and vinyl record.
"I’m not originally from Richmond. I moved here 28 years ago and I can honestly say I am just now starting to feel like I can say “I’m from Richmond” (although I still say I’m from Northern Va). Today is a beautiful post hurricane Irene Sunday. The sky is blue, birds are singing and there is even a breeze. I decided to celebrate by doing something very Richmond. I headed down to Willow Lawn (yes, I’m a West Ender). I love the little restaurants with patios and the abundance of people watching, So I found myself a seat at Noodles & Co to settle in for some lunch and observation. Willow Lawn always has that laid back feel. No one is rushing, everyone takes time for ice cream or coffee and just to hang out. It’s like the park but without grass. One woman was stretched out on a bench enjoying her book. Several students were there charging their iPods (due to most of us being without power today) and doing homework. Many people venturing out for that much needed cup of coffee at Starbucks. I was content to enjoy the outdoors, my lunch and a book. This is my kind of Sunday, minus the hurricane the night before
Just an observation: hummingbirds haven’t visited my feeder all summer. I’ve been bad and & not filling it. Today they have visited twice & made it clear they were annoyed with me for it being empty. They hovered, they dive bombed, they gave me the evil flutter. You get the picture. Then they flew over to my neighbor’s Cannas. It occurred to me that most if their natural food source has been destroyed with the storm. So people, if you can, feed the hummingbirds.
Very fun #Bones video from @Dreamhunter72 kudos! :D
LOVED THIS!
Whoever did this did a great job!
Never saw this one.
I think David’s answers was really mature in front of Hart’s answer. I still think Hart was a little right because sometimes, we all forget to just enjoy the show for what it is, a tv show … But like Emily said “there was a LOT of profanity here !”. He should have been more careful with his words.
That being said, can I just say how much I laughed when David said “What if she calls the baby Andrea ?!” ; Still love everyone in this crew !!!!!
I love how Hart just jump right to “stop using ‘the fans’ when it’s just your opinion”. All their responses where great.
“Park service spokesman Bill Line said Tuesday night that structural engineers found the crack where the 555-foot landmark narrows considerably.”
Now it’s closed to keep people safe from the 91,000 tons of marble potentially falling. WHAT DID I JUST SAY?
I’m way too distracted by bright & shiny things (like cell phones/laptops/ other electronic do dads). Who needs diamonds? Oh yeah, I do! I like them too. Never mind. I’m girly geek.
They weren’t even dating. Now just imagine how it’ll be next season …
